Science News Stem Cell Researchers Given Top Medical Award

Stem Cell Researchers Given Top Medical Award

Stem Cell researchers have been given a top medical award for their work in human stem cells.
WXXA reports that the annual Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research award has been given to the three stem cell researchers.
The winners are Elaine Fuchs of Rockefeller University in New York City, James A. Thomson of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health and Shinya Yamanaka of Kyoto University in Japan.
The researchers will share $500,000, which is the largest award in medicine and science in the U.S. The Albany Medical Prize was established in 2000 with a $50 million gift commitment by the late Morris "Marty" Silverman. This year's winners will receive the award on May 13.
James J. Barba, president of Albany Medical Center, said the selection committee wanted to recognize the important work being done in stem cell research.
